MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Former Rep. Jo Bonner (R) announced Friday he supports Mobile attorney Bradley Byrne for the Republican nomination for Alabama’s First Congressional District.

Bonner said Byrne will represent District 1 with integrity.

“I think he will not only be an outstanding congressman, but I think he will also pick his fights wisely,” Bonner said.

When asked about criticism from Byrne’s opponent, Orange Beach businessman Dean Young, Bonner told FOX10 News anchor Bob Grip, “Quite frankly, there are some who have an imaginary measuring stick to determine how conservative is conservative.  I really am offended by people who say he’s not conservative enough.  Compared to whom?”

Bonner went on to say anyone who believes President Obama would walk away from the Affordable Care Act is “living in a dream world”.

Bonner resigned on  August 5 to accept a position as vice chancellor for economic development and governmental relations for the University of Alabama system. He said he felt the position would not have been available to him if he had served his entire term of office.
